If It’s Not One Thing, It’s Another

Thanks Microsoft.

I’ve been very generous to Vista over the past year. Many friends and colleagues, the press, and particularly the blogoshpere have been scathing about its performance, reliability and compatibility.

So far I’ve been confused as to what all these people are complaining about. Vista has some great new features (I can’t live without the search), it’s much more secure, and is much nicer to look at for 14 hours a day compared to it’s predecessor. Ok - there have been a few hiccups along the way, and there are a couple of annoyances, but nothing to write home about (or blog about).

Until today.

Getting up this morning I noticed that the computer had done it’s auto-update thing (which it does even from hibernate - previously classed as quirky, now classed as very annoying). So I sit down as usual at 7.30 to see what’s been happening in the world whilst I’ve been sleeping and wait for it to boot up. And wait, and wait, and wait…

Several hours later I’ve tried everything possible to make it start - I’ve tried just waiting, I’ve been into safe mode and done a system restore, I’ve disabled drivers, I’ve done just about everything possible. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and I have sworn my head off at this ****** computer, and I have wondered out load just why and how this can happen?

Many more hours later and I’ve restored my last backup, reinstalled all of my software, re-set all of my configuration and generally wasted my day doing nothing productive.

Vista represents little short of three decades of refinement in desktop computer operating systems - but apparently one still can’t be sure that it will work when you get up in the morning. Sorry Microsoft, but I’ve joined the ranks scathing critics - this sort of thing is just not acceptable any more for any reason..

The primary fault with Vista is that it was much more a marketing release than a technology advance. This means that this is, arguably, the third straight… maybe fourth straight… release that is much more innovative than inventive, much more marketing than technology. Arguably, the average computer user would be quite productive with Windows XP (or 2000!) and Office 97. Upgrades after that — including Vista and Office 07 — have been much more for the benefit of M$ than of their customers.
